Hendrick's Gin Scotland

Hendrick's Gin

Hendrick's Gin is a high-quality Gin from Scotland. Sold in its iconic dark brown apothecary bottle, Hendrick's is one of the most popular Gins in the world.

When Hendrick's Gin hit the market, Gin wasn't the thriving and versatile spirit category as it is today. And with its distinctive botanical selection and clever marketing approach, Hendrick's was a forerunner for most modern Gin brands. The combination of Bulgarian rose and cucumber essence was a bold move at the time, and it still feels highly creative even twenty years later.

Hendrick's Gin prides itself as the "most unusual Gin", and while that might not be the case for the actual Gin, the brand itself is highly innovative and extraordinary. The brand belongs to William Grant & Sons, a family-owned distilling company from Scotland. The mastermind behind the Gin, though, is Lesley Gracie. She was hired by the company for about ten years already when she came up with Hendrick's Gin.

Her task was to create a super-premium Gin that stands out from the masses. And she delivered. Back then, when Gin was primarily juniper forward with classic botanicals, she came up with something completely new and highly unusual.

The history of Hendrick's Gin

Hendrick's Gin got first released in the United States in 2000. And though the Gin is originally from Scotland, the launch in the UK was only three years later, in 2003. Together with other premium-Gin releases like Tanqueray No 10 (launched in 2000), Hendrick's tried to bring Gin back on the bar menus.

The background was that the Gin market in the UK shrank by 25% from 1990 to 2000. But with new and innovative base spirits and the renaissance of craft cocktails, many classic cocktails were returning to bar menus.

And indeed, the demand for Gin was on the rise again. First slowly, but since 2010 the market has been growing dramatically. Not in overall sales numbers but especially in the upper, premium Gin section. And despite increasing competition, Hendrick's stands its ground with a bold and creative marketing department combined with a high-quality Gin. And remember, it still claims to be "the most unusual Gin". So let's check what makes it so exceptional.

What's special about Hendricks Gin?

Hendrick's Gin has a unique flavor profile refined with Bulgarian rose and cucumber essence. And not only are the ingredients remarkable, but the marketing slogans are also. One of the more popular ones goes "Preferred by 1 out of 1000 Gin drinkers." A humorous and witty way of marketing that perfectly fits the distinctive Gin.

Botanicals in Hendricks Gin

The botanicals used for Hendricks Gin are angelica root, caraway seeds, chamomile, coriander seeds, cubeb pepper berries, elderflower, lemon peels, meadowsweet, orange peels, and orris root. After distillation and blending, the essence of rose and cucumber completes the spirit.

And yes, you read that correctly. The Gin is blended because Hendrick's Gin gets distilled in two different stills. One is a head still, the other a copper pot still. And both products are blended before the final ingredient is added.

What Hendrick's Gin tastes like

Hendrick's Gin has a fresh and floral aroma. Spicy floral notes mix with lime, pine, and hints of eucalyptus.

Sipped neat, the spirit shows a smooth texture and surprisingly strong notes of juniper and citrus blend with peppery notes. And what follows is the signature taste of Hendrick's: a floral aroma with hints of stewed cucumber complemented by junipery notes.

Overall, it is a pretty fresh and floral representative of the London Dry category - a type of Gin that usually shows a more traditional flavor profile.

Best Tonic Water to go with Hendrick's Gin

We recommend Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water. This fine tonic water with subtle citrus aromas offers Hendrick's Gin the space it needs to breathe. A pleasant bitter note in the finish makes the combination a strong Gin & Tonic.

To help bring out the cucumber flavor, Hendrick's often is served with fresh cucumber slices.

Other Hendrick's Gin releases

Like most other Gin brands, Hendrick's started to release some new products in the last couple of years. Those are Hendrick's Lunar Gin, Midsummer Solstice, and Hendrick's Orbium.

Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice

Hendrick's Gin Midsummer Solstice

Midsummer Solstice was the first release of Hendrick's "Cabinet of Curiosities." It is a limited edition trying to emphasize the existing flavors of the original Hendrick's Gin. The result is a complex yet intensely floral Gin with just enough juniper notes to be called a Gin.

Hendrick's Lunar Gin

Hendrick's Lunar Gin

Hendrick's Lunar Gin is a strictly limited edition. A spirit advertised as "conceived under the influence of moonlight." The overall taste of Hendrick's Lunar is floral and spicy, with notes of cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon. The Gin got released in 2020 as the second release of the "Cabinet of Curiosities."

Hendrick's Orbium

Hendrick's Orbium Gin

Orbium is a new take on the classic Hendrick's recipe. It's a "quininated" Gin, meaning, besides wormwood and lotus blossoms, also quinine is added to the traditional mix. It is a perfect choice for a Gin and Tonic because the tonic water helps pronounce the wormwood notes.
